Knowing your language level can unlock greater confidence and career and life opportunities. You yourself, employers and other interested parties will be better able to understand where and to what degree you may be able to take on additional roles such as meeting and greeting, presenting, public speaking and negotiation, dealing with stakeholders, partners and clients and international representation and liaison, all of which depend on communication skills in other languages.Ìý
What are ÎÞÓÇ´«Ã½ Language Level Assessments?
Your speaking skills in a secondÌýlanguage will be assessedÌýwith theÌýfocus on an oralÌýinteraction, which is so important for interpersonal communication, and a foundational social skill, which demonstrates the ability to initiate dialogue, manage different topics in a conversation, speak directly and convey relevant information.
Ìý
Language Level Assessments provideÌýthose with a second or other languages a more formal means to achieve recognition and certification of their language skills through the UK’s international Chartered body for linguists. Candidates will be assessedÌýaccording to the Ìý(CEFR) and receive a certificate which confirms their level of attainment.Ìý
How do they work?
Based on ÎÞÓÇ´«Ã½'s extensive language assessmentÌýactivities, we believe the surest way to gaugeÌýspeaking skills is with an expert language assessor, who can evaluate how you speak, listen, engage and react - as you would in a real life, professional or working situation.
ÎÞÓÇ´«Ã½ Language Level AssessmentsÌýassess your speaking and communicative skillsÌýin a realisticÌýcontext, so you can be confident that your language level will be accurately assessed. There are no multiple choice questions based on a recording or video, andÌýyour speaking skills will not be assessed through AI or recorded messages. This is an assessment of human-to-human interaction,Ìýso theÌýlevelÌýconfirmed by the assessor will accurately reflect yourÌýcurrent speaking skill levelÌýto any employer, client, partner or stakeholder, which couldÌýlead to enhanced career prospects in anÌýinternational setting.
Language Level Assessments can also be used as a useful diagnostic tool to ascertain how muchÌýfurther learning time and input is required, if your assessed skills do not meet your needs and expectations.
Who are theyÌýfor?
Language Level Assessments are for over 18 year olds who have some level of spoken language and want to assessÌýtheir speaking skills in that language for themselves or to demonstrate their aptitude to others, such as employers.
Language levels are assessed against the CEFR with particular reference to the standards forÌý.Ìý
CEFR C1+ or ÎÞÓÇ´«Ã½ Professional LevelÌý
At the highest level of speaking skills, you would be demonstrating a level of spoken language use which evidencesÌýthe ability to:Ìý
-
Communicate with ease inÌýprofessional, businessÌýor academic settings
-
Confidently participateÌýin workplace meetings and discussions
-
Articulate complex ideas clearlyÌýwhen speaking or presenting
At this level,Ìýthe equivalent of C1 or aboveÌýaccording to the CEFR, you would be demonstrating language at the ÎÞÓÇ´«Ã½ÌýprofessionalÌýlevel.Ìý
CEFR B2 or ÎÞÓÇ´«Ã½ Working Level
If youÌýdemonstrate the ability to:Ìý
-
Express opinions and present arguments effectively in one-to-oneÌýcommunication
- Respond effectively to most requests for explanationÌýand questions from others
-
Participate actively and effectively in meetings, conveyingÌýyour intended message
You will be achievingÌýtheÌýequivalent of B2 according to the CEFR, andÌýmeeting the ÎÞÓÇ´«Ã½Ìýworking level of language.
Other LevelsÌý
If you do not meet these higher 'professional' and 'working level'ÌýstandardsÌýyou may still have useful, although more limitedÌýspoken language skills, notably if you achieve B1Ìýin spoken language use, according to the CEFR as set out in ÎÞÓÇ´«Ã½'s Basic to IndependentÌýlanguage skills.Ìý
However, to avoid any disappointment, you may prefer to work on and practice with your languages some more, unless you feel reasonably confident ofÌýmeetingÌýthe descriptors for theÌýB1 standard as above.
We are, though, very happy to assess you at beginnerÌýlevels if that is your choice.ÌýÌý
